The story of my career as a writer and has been formed by three defining elements:

1. My love of science fiction and my need to see the creation of superheroes who looked like me, thus I created a biracial female superhero and her name is Vela Kurv, and I also wrote a series of books that have been published to tell her story.
2. My desire to shine a light on the inequity of literacy and education, particularly for children of color in the United States that live in poverty and challenging life circumstances; I know this story well because I am also a teacher.
3. The present-day state of affairs for a large population in the United States that comprises the underemployed – qualified, trained and/or educated workers that are forced to work well below their experience in order to survive.
